Heavy snowfall this winter could have created roof damage

The United States has experienced one of the harshest winters in recent history. Major snowstorm after snowstorm barreled across many parts of the US, leaving behind tangled traffic, downed power lines and flooding. The most recent large storms that bore down on the Eastern US caused damage to hundreds of roofs throughout the region. Homeowners as well as businesses were left to face the task of repairing the damage left behind.

If your home or business has suffered roof damage by a storm, the first thing to do is to contact your insurance company. It is the insurance adjuster’s job to assess the damage and your responsibility to hire a roofing contractor to do the repairs. Deductibles and insurance quotes are between you and the insurance company and the contractor does not need to see the quote before giving you an estimate.

When you have roof damage, it is always a good idea to have more than one contractor look at your roof damage and give you an estimate. You should expect to receive a detailed estimate which includes an itemized list of materials that will be used as well as the labor costs. Be sure also to as how long the work is expected to take. It can be a bit hard form contractors to tell you exactly how long the work will take, but you should be able to get a general idea of the schedule once the materials have been ordered and delivered to the site.

While you are gathering your estimates, it is a good idea to do a bit of research concerning the contractors. It is imperative that the roofing contractor you hire has experience in the area. Call any references given and ask friends and co-workers if they are familiar with the company’s reputation and work. Confirm that the contractor has a license so that building codes are requirements are adhered to.

If the storm as resulted in a portion of your roof collapsing, then the structural damage and water damage may be extensive. Ask the contractor what exactly he plans to do about the affected beams and supporting joints that need to be repaired. Heavy snow is potentially very dangerous and the weight put on weak roofs often results in cracking and weakening of the surrounding area. It is also very important to thoroughly dry and/or replace wet insulation in attics and walls as mold can easily and quickly begin to grow. Mold that has not been dealt with early on can result in often serious health problems to inhabitants.
